Présentation

“Revolution!” This class will focus on the representation of the British colonies in the New World, until the emergence of the revolutionary spirit that ultimately led to Independence. The 17th and 18th centuries will be dealt with thanks to a wide range of primary sources (archives) and secondary sources (films and articles). We will examine the social, political, cultural, and intellectual history of Revolutionary America (c. 1760-1800) through the eyes of the “Founding Fathers” as well as through those of Native Americans, African Americans, women, and Loyalists. The language, ideology and culture of resistance and independence will be our major focus, along with the meanings given to the Revolution by contemporaries and later Americans. The texts studied will be distributed to the students at the beginning of the semester.
